2025 Another Audience Artist
Audrey Johnson is a dance artist based in Oakland, CA|Ohlone land, and grew up around Detroit, MI|Anishinaabe land. Audrey experiments with improvisation and embodied time travel in her performance, choreographic, and teaching work in refusal of colonized time and space.
Her work has been presented throughout the Bay Area and Detroit by CounterPulse, ODC, Gravity, FRESH Festival, Queering Dance Festival, 2727 California Street, the Malcolm X Jazz Festival, Sidewalk Arts Festival Detroit, and Daring Dances.Audrey has performed in the companies and projects of artists Gerald Casel, Jennifer Harge, Biba Bell, Detour Productions, Stephanie Hewett, among others. She holds a BFA in Dance from Wayne State University, and was a co-founder of Collective Sweat Detroit.
In residency at Another Audience, Audrey will pursue her ongoing project land|body|memory, a practice of place-based movement prayers and encounters in duet with land. Through movement practices centered on attunement, this project asks for listening to archives of the body and the land, engaging the unseen, and valuing presence as a practice of knowing.
Audrey’s work experiments with the form of improvisation with the intention of expanding the possibilities of where and how we source knowledge and imagination. This work challenges our collective capacity to be with and curious about the unknown. It is a physical practice for divesting from white-supremacist knowledge valuation systems that privilege control, purity, domination, capitalist time, and conformity. Audrey will also spend this residency continuing to develop the mythologies of her performance moniker ARTEMISIA, a creature who beckons us to encounter and reckon with our shadows as a necessary process of transformation through and beyond American identity.
