Hilary Clark & Nicole Daunic

2024 Another Audience Artists

Hilary Clark and Nicole Daunic are dancers.

Their process draws upon their individual and collaborative research on the embodied intelligence, creative process and critical capacities of dancers. Proposing forms of dance-making that emerge through relational attunements and co-mingling navigations of decentralized, heterogeneous tensions, desires, and human and nonhuman forces, they situate their practice in the middle of ambiguous atmospheres and zones of indeterminacy in order to foreground a reverence for the excess, multiplicity, and over-abundance of any experience.

MOTHERLOAD

The mother lode: the primary vein or source of gold or other mineral resources in mining, or the originary source of something in great abundance–real or imagined.

You are entrusted with everything and entitled to nothing. -Sufi Proverb

Hilary and Nicole develop speculative practices in collaboration with tree stumps, deforested lands, processes of decay, and mycorrhizal networks to explore human/nonhuman forms of mutuality, care, and abundance beyond tropes of inexhaustible care-giving rooted in extractive capitalism and patriarchy. Through a consideration of ecosystem services, the “mother tree,” the mother archetype, and domestic and cultural economies, they examine the load of the systematic concealment of/dependence on human and nonhuman forms of immaterial labor.  Attending to atmospheric, collective, environmental and corporeal signs of collapse and burn-out, we engage the fecundity of rot, entangle with more-than-human scales of time and space and orient through relational, nonlinear processes that emit forms of excess and abundance that sustain us, yet are no one’s to claim.
